The Guv bows to the King: Shapiro declares LeBron James Day
Philadelphia has a robust recent history of Pennsylvania governors who are rabid fans of their teams.
Everyone remembers “The Guv” Ed Rendell having a seat on Eagles Post Game Live for several years. He was always actively involved with Philadelphia teams, both as mayor of the city and as governor of the state.
Now there’s Josh Shapiro, who isn’t shy about his Philadelphia fandom either – and wasted no time in proving it.
A mere 17 minutes after news broke that James was joining the Sixers, Shapiro declared today LeBron James Day in the state of Pennsylvania.
He put out a tweet with a proclamation and welcomed James to Philly.
The proclamation, which is purely celebrational, highlights James’ background and achievements through his first 23 seasons in the NBA, but also talked about his philanthropic work in the communities both where he’s from and where he’s played, and said that such a rich history both on and off the court will make him a welcome member of the state of Pennsylvania.
“Pennsylvania is honored to welcome LeBron James to our Commonwealth as he joins the Philadelphia 76ers for his best season yet,” the proclamation read, sounding hopeful.
OnPattison reached out to Gov. Shapiro for further comment but did not here back by the time this story was published.
However, Shapiro did call into 6ABC’s 12pm newscast to comment on LeBron coming to Philly.
“Oh My God … what an amazing day for Philly and for Pennsylvania,” he said. “We’ve got a championship team we’re putting on the court and the fact that King James chose us is amazing. It’s just amazing. I’m almost speechless … it’s incredible.”
When asked if he had any inkling that this was going to happen, Shapiro said, “I don’t know if I can get away with a ‘no comment’ on live television, but…”
Shapiro went forth do do his best Rendell impression and break down what this means for the Sixers.
“We probably have the best starting five right now,” he said. ” We have an incredible back court with VJ (Edgcombe) and (Tyrese) Maxey. We have championship guys in the frontcourt with LeBron, of course, and Jaylen Brown, and arguably, pound-for-pound- the most talent player in the NBA in Joel (Embiid). When he’s healthy, oh my gosh, look out. … And we’ve got a great bench now that can go three-and-D in a way that we could not before. … I can’t be more pumped.”
The reactions to LeBron signing with the 76ers did come pouring in from around the basketball world, specifically on his new team.
Here was Maxey’s reaction:
And then there’s Brown:
If you don’t get the reference, Brown previously posted the phrase, “Throw the ball up” when he was traded to the Sixers, almost as if to say, let’s tip this thing off and go after it.
And then there’s Edgecombe, who posted this to his Instagram story:
The one Sixer we haven’t heard from yet?
Joel Embiid.
That might be a bit surprising since Embiid has always been so quick to respond to the biggest news on social media. Additionally, there was a time when Embiid lobbied LeBron to come join the Sixers.
His silence is interesting.
National pundits have reacted in a variety of different manners.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said he was “shocked” by the Sixers signing of James.
Chris Broussard from Fox Sports, thinks this fit may not be as comfortable as some might think:
And then there’s Barstool’s Dave Portnoy, who likes to troll Philly fans at every turn:
Portnoy also found some humor in Shapiro’s decision to declare today LeBron James Day:
And this is all just Day 1 of LeBron’s tenure here. It’s only going to get more and more crazy as we go forth.
