Things are gearing up in the race to succeed Allyson Schwartz in Pa.’s 13th district, as candidates seek endorsements and fill their inner circles.
New staff for Margolies
Marjorie Margolies, who is seeking to return to Washington after serving one term from 1993-95, named political operative Don “DA” Jones to head up her campaign.
Jones previously worked for former Philadelphia Controller Jonathan Saidel, who also briefly sought the nomination in PA-13. Saidel dropped out in April and endorsed Margolies even before she officially declared her candidacy.
“DA has been with me since my first run for Congress,” Margolies said in a press release. “His expertise helped propel Jonathan Saidel into the political icon that he has become in the Northeast and among Democrats across the 13th congressional district.”
The move helps Margolies play in Philadelphia; city voters comprise roughly 50% of the PA-13 Democratic primary.
Much of the Philly Democratic establishment, including party chair and Congressman Bob Brady and many unions, support state Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Phila) in the PA-13 primary.
The new staff cements Margolies’ ‘in’ in Philly. Saidel and Jones are very well connected.
Saidel campaign aide Dylan McGarry serves as Margolies’ campaign spokesman.
Humane Society PAC for Leach
In addition, the battle for endorsements continues as the Humane Society’s Legislative Fund threw its support behind state Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Montco).
“Daylin Leach is one of Pennsylvania’s strongest champions of animal protection, and an effective leader in cracking down on cruelty and abuse,” said Michael Markarian, president of the animal advocacy group’s political wing. “He has consistently stood up for the values of kindness and compassion and we urge voters who care about the humane treatment of animals to support Daylin Leach.”
Perhaps inspired by the canines they seek to protect, Humane Society activists are known for being strongly loyal to endorsed candidates.
While Leach received the organization’s endorsement, the Human Society noted that Margolies also supports their issues. “But Daylin Leach gets the nod for a career-long commitment to animal welfare and active leadership on these issues.”
So far, four candidates have declared their intention to run in PA-13: Margolies, Leach, Boyle, and physician and health care activist Valerie Arkoosh.

The only question is whether young Boyle knows the fix is in for MMM with Brady or whether he will be the last to know. The Brady team is with MMM and it cant be done without Brady’s nodding approval

Saidel is a great guy. Very funny and a terrific speaker at events. He’s a bit of a stand-up comic like Daylin, but more like he escaped from a club in the Catskills.
However, Saidel’s been out of elected office for 8 years, so I don’t think he’s going to have a measurable impact against Bob Brady’s manipulations. Margolies served one term 20 years (and two redistrictings ago). She’s 71 years old.
Also, as of June 24th, she was registered in Montgomery county, Lower Merion 8th ward 3rd precinct, which is listed as in the 2nd Congressional district.
Daylin is in the 7th Congressional district.
I wish Daylin would run for the 7th so I could have a congressman I respect. It’s an open seat (from the Dems perspective), and it’s so hard to get anyone to run for it, that I doubt he’d even have a primary challenger.
