Lee To Introduce Articles of Impeachment Against Attorney General Bondi
In a social media post Tuesday, Rep. Summer Lee (D-12) announced that she will introduce articles of impeachment against U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi over the Epstein files.
“The DOJ’s refusal to comply with our subpoena and the law has gone on for too long,” wrote Lee. “I’ll be introducing articles of impeachment against Pam Bondi. It’s time to stop allowing institutions and our own government to continue protecting the wealthy and powerful.”
Lee is the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee on Federal Law Enforcement. Last month, she introduced an amendment to hold Bondi in civil contempt for noncompliance with the committee’s subpoena to release the full, unredacted Epstein files.
Her comments followed an investigation by NPR that showed the Justice Department withheld some of the Jeffrey Epstein files related to allegations that President Donald Trump sexually abused a minor. The DOJ also apparently removed some documents from the public database where accusations against Jeffrey Epstein also mention Trump.
The Justice Department declined to answer NPR’s questions on the record about these specific files, what is in them, and why they are not published.
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released a statement after the NPR story became public, noting that the DOJ actions were a violation of both the Oversight Committee’s subpoena and the Epstein Files Transparency Act.
“For the last few weeks, Oversight Democrats have been investigating the FBI’s handling of allegations from 2019 of sexual assault on a minor made against President Donald Trump by a survivor,” wrote Garcia.
“Yesterday, I reviewed unredacted evidence logs at the Department of Justice. Oversight Democrats can confirm that the DOJ appears to have illegally withheld FBI interviews with this survivor who accused President Trump of heinous crimes. Oversight Democrats will open a parallel investigation into this.
Under the Oversight Committee’s subpoena and the Epstein Files Transparency Act, these records must immediately be shared with Congress and the American public. Covering up direct evidence of a potential assault by the President of the United States is the most serious possible crime in this White House cover up.”
The DOJ did respond to the Oversight Committee in a social media post, saying that Democrats are just stirring up the public in an attempt to “manufacture outrage.”
“The Justice Department has repeatedly said publicly AND directly to NPR prior to deadline – NOTHING has been deleted. If files are temporarily pulled for victim redactions or to redact Personally Identifiable Information, then those documents are promptly restored online and are publicly available. ALL responsive documents have been produced unless a document falls within one of the following categories: duplicates, privileged, or part of an ongoing federal investigation.”
