Fetterman Calls On President Trump To Fire Noem

In the wake of the killing of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman is calling on President Donald Trump to fire Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

At a Saturday press conference following the shooting, Noem accused Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, of being a domestic terrorist.

Without evidence, Noem said, “Violence against a government because of ideological reasons and for reasons to resist and to perpetuate violence. That is the definition of domestic terrorism. He was there to perpetuate violence, and he was asked to show up and to continue to resist by a governor who’s irresponsible and has a long history of corruption and lying, and we won’t stand for it anymore.”

The remarks were also echoed by White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller.

“A domestic terrorist tried to assassinate federal law enforcement and this is your response? You and the state’s entire Democrat leadership team have been flaming the flames of insurrection for the singular purpose of stopping the deportation of illegals who invaded the country,” Miller said in response to Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s statement, calling for ICE to leave Minnesota.

Fetterman waited more than 48 hours before making any public response, saying “the operation in Minneapolis should stand down and immediately end. It has become an ungovernable and dangerous urban theatre for civilians and law enforcement that is compatible with the American spirit.

“I reject the calls to defund or abolish ICE,” he continued. “I strongly disagree with many strategies and practices ICE deployed in Minneapolis, and believe that must change.”

Less than 24 hours later, the Commonwealth’s senior senator called for Noem to resign.

Interestingly, Fetterman’s wife, Gisele, posted on social media before her husband, writing “For more than a decade, I lived undocumented in the US. Every day carried the same uncertainty and fear lived in my body – a tight chest, shallow breaths, racing heart. What I thought was my private, chronic dread has now become a shared national wound. This now-daily violence is not “law and order.” It is terror inflicted on people who contribute, love, and build their lives here. It’s devastatingly cruel and unAmerican ????.”

Pennsylvania’s Republican Sen. Dave McCormick posted his support of the Border Patrol, as well as ICE, “for the critical work they do to enforce our laws,” on social media. But he also called for “a full investigation into the tragedy in Minneapolis. We need all the facts.”

Six Pennsylvania Democratic congressional representatives have signed a resolution, calling for Noem’s impeachment.

Reps. Brendan Boyle (D-02), Dwight Evans (D-03), Madeleine Dean (D-04), Mary Gay Scanlon (D-05), Summer Lee (D-12), and Chris Deluzio (D-17) are cosponsors of H.Res. 996 that calls for the impeachment of Noem “for high crimes and misdeameanors.”

Noem characterized the event as a “violent riot” and said that the border patrol agent who fired the fatal shots was afraid for his life and the lives of his fellow officers — a benchmark for justifiable use of deadly force from a law enforcement officer.

“I don’t know of any peaceful protester that shows up with a gun and ammunition rather than a sign. This is a violent riot when you have someone showing up with weapons,” Noem said.

The White House, to date, has publicly backed Noem with spokesperson Karoline Leavitt saying that she enjoys “the utmost confidence and trust of the president of the United States.” But it decided to send border czar Tom Homan to oversee ICE operations in Minneapolis, suggesting that changes may be forthcoming.

Homan is now the “main point of contact” for operations, replacing Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino who is being moved out of Minneapolis.
