Dr. Oz Picked to Serve as Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Administrator

Mehmet Oz, who rank unsuccessfully for the United States Senate in Pennsylvania in 2022, was tapped by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator.

Oz, who lost to Sen. John Fetterman in the general election after defeating Dave McCormick in the GOP primary, graduated from Harvard College, and earned a joint MD and MBA degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Wharton Business School. The TV doctor and media personality does not have any experience in heading a large government bureaucracy.

“There may be no physician more qualified and capable than Dr. Oz to Make America Healthy Again,” said Trump in a statement. “He is an eminent physician, heart surgeon, inventor, and world-class communicator, who has been at the forefront of healthy living for decades. Dr. Oz will work closely with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to take on the illness industrial complex, and all the horrible chronic diseases left in its wake.

“Our broken Healthcare System harms everyday Americans, and crushes our Country’s budget. Dr. Oz will be a leader in incentivizing disease prevention, so we get the best results in the world for every dollar we spend on healthcare in our great country. He will also cut waste and fraud within our country’s most expensive government agency, which is a third of our nation’s healthcare spend, and a quarter of our entire national budget.”

CMS is the federal agency that provides health coverage to more than 160 million through Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and the Health Insurance Marketplace. CMS works in partnership with the entire health care community to improve quality, equity and outcomes in the health care system.

Chiquita Brooks-LaSure currently serves as the Administrator. A former policy official who played a key role in guiding the Affordable Care Act through passage and implementation, Brooks-LaSure has decades of experience in the federal government, on Capitol Hill, and in the private sector.

The nomination also brings full circle an irony that McCormick, as well as Fetterman, will have the opportunity to vote on Oz’s nomination to the post.

“Well, I’ve been very, very clear if Dr. Oz agrees to protect and preserve Medicaid and Medicare, I’m absolutely going to vote for the dude,” said Fetterman. “I don’t have hard feelings or anything, I’d have a beer with the dude,” he added.
