DCCC Adds Harvie, Brooks to ‘Red to Blue’ Program
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) announced that it has added Bob Harvie and Bob Brooks to its highly-competitive ‘Red to Blue’ program, signaling that the DCCC is invested in providing them with the support needed to continue building a winning campaign.
“As the American people reject House Republicans’ disastrous, cost-spiking agenda, House Democrats have the momentum to take back the majority. These latest additions to our Red to Blue program represent the strength of our people-first message and the broad appeal of our top-tier candidates,” said DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene. “These candidates will win because they are authentic, independent-minded leaders who are rooted in their communities, demonstrating they have what it takes to win and fight to make life more affordable for hardworking families.”
Harvie, a Bucks County commissioner, is running for the Democratic nomination in PA-01, hoping to unseat five-term incumbent Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick. He faces Lucia Simonelli in the May 19 primary.
“Bob Harvie is a proud son of Bucks County who has an undeniable record of showing up and serving the community that raised him. Bob is the strongest candidate to take on Brian Fitzpatrick and finally give Bucks and Montgomery County families a leader in Congress who will stand up to Donald Trump and make life more affordable,” said DelBene.
Brooks, president of the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association, is running for the Democratic nomination in PA-07, hoping to unseat freshman incumbent Rep. Ryan Mackenzie. He faces three other challengers for the nomination, including former federal prosecutor Ryan Crosswell, former Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure, and energy executive Carol Obando-Derstine.
“As a 20-year Bethlehem firefighter and union president, Bob Brooks has been on the frontlines serving the community he loves. He understands the challenges that hardworking Lehigh Valley families are facing because he’s lived them himself, and he has the callouses on his hands to prove it. He’s the strongest candidate to flip this must-win seat in November and deliver real results for his community,” said DelBene.
McClure told Axios in a phone interview that being passed over won’t impact his relationship with party leaders if he wins.
“When I am our nominee and [GOP Rep. Ryan Mackenzie] is toast, I think the DCCC and all its members will be really happy about that,” he said.
The ‘Red to Blue’ program is designed to provide top-tier candidates with organizational and fundraising support to help them continue building winning campaigns. Additionally, through Red to Blue the DCCC provides strategic guidance, staff resources, candidate trainings, fundraising support, and more.
The selections have aggravated some in the Latino community who see the endorsements as “placing the thumb on the scale” of the primary process.
BOLD PAC, the campaign committee of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, told Semafor that Democrats would have to work to earn Latino voters’ trust after bypassing their preferred candidates in districts with substantial Latino populations.
“Latino votes and candidates – like Randy (Villegas of California) and Carol (Obando-Derstine) – are not a small factor in the fight for the House majority; they are central to it,” said BOLD PAC Chair Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-Calif.).
“The Democratic Party has clearly made progress earning Latino trust, but we still have a long way to go, and we will be with Randy and Carol every step of the way through their primaries.”
There are four Hispanic candidates currently in the ‘Red to Blue’ program, including three that were added on Monday.
