After Introducing Legislation to Ban Congressional Stock Trading, Bresnahan Makes Additional 85 Deals

File under the category of “Actions speak louder than words.”

Days after introducing legislation calling for a Congressional stock trading ban, Rep. Rob Bresnahan (R-08) was at it again, reporting 85 additional stock trades from May 11-15.

On May 6, the northeast Pennsylvania Republican introduced his “Transparency in Representation through Uniform Stock Trading Ban (TRUST) Act,” that would bar members of Congress and their spouses from purchasing or selling stocks upon taking office.

“The public should never have to question whether their elected officials are serving the public or their own portfolios,” said Rep. Bresnahan at the time. “I am introducing the TRUST Act to restore the integrity Americans expect and deserve from their government. This legislation allows for new levels of transparency and is a safeguard to ensure Washington works for the people.”

Interestingly enough, Bresnahan has not co-sponsored a similar bill introduced by Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-R.I.) just days into the 119th Congress which would require a member of Congress, as well as any spouse or dependent child of a member, to place specified investments into a qualified blind trust. Seven members of the Pennsylvania delegation signed on as co-sponsors: Reps. Madeline Dean (D-04), Mary Gay Scanlon (D-05), Chrissy Houlahan (D-06), Ryan Mackenzie (R-07), Scott Perry (R-10), Summer Lee (D-12), and Chris Deluzio (D-17). Bresnahan remains a glaring omission.

The freshman representative was identified by the Wall Street Journal as the second-most prolific trader during the week following President Donald Trump’s April Liberation Day announcement, trailing only Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) with just under 200 trades.

“Rep. Bresnahan does not trade his own stocks, he has a financial advisor like millions of Americans,” said spokesperson Hannah Pope back in early April.

“Corrupt D.C. swamp creature Congressman Rob Bresnahan just cannot stop trading stocks despite literally campaigning on a pledge to ban congressional stock trading, and it’s the reason why he will be a one-term member of Congress,” said DCCC spokesperson Eli Cousin. Bresnahan was elected to represent Northeast Pennsylvania, but he’d clearly be more at home representing Wall Street.”
