A Look at Pennsylvania U.S. Senate Race As the Recount Begins

Now that we have entered the recount stage of Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate contest between Dave McCormick and Bob Casey, let’s take a look at the unofficial results around the Commonwealth.

McCormick won 55 of the state’s 67 counties with Casey holding a plurality in Allegheny, Bucks, Centre, Chester, Dauphin, Delaware, Erie, Lackawanna, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, and Philadelphia.

Casey’s dozen still finds the three-term incumbent Democrat trailing by just under 24,000 votes but by only 0.43 percent, triggering the state’s mandatory recount law.

In four previous recounts of Pennsylvania statewide elections,

This is the eighth time the automatic recount provision has been triggered since the passage of Act 97 of 2004. In the four cases in which the recount was carried out, the initial results of the election were affirmed. Those recounts and the costs for each were as follows:

  • 2022 primary: Oz vs. McCormick, Republican race for U.S. Senate, $1,052,609
  • 2021 general: Dumas vs. Crompton, Commonwealth Court, $1,117,180
  • 2011 primary: Boockvar vs. Ernsberger, Democratic race for Commonwealth Court, $525,006.70
  • 2009 general: Lazarus vs. Colville vs. Smith, Superior Court race, $541,698.56

The climb is steep for the Casey campaign who hopes that he can close the gap with more than 80,000 uncounted provisional and mail-in and absentee ballots remaining.

Here is an interactive map with the unofficial results for each county.
