State House & State Senate Open Thread

PoliticsPA will be covering election news and returns all Tuesday and late into the night to bring you the latest. This thread will the state House & Senate primaries from around the state, plus the 6 state house special elections.

10:51pm: After all the complaints about the mailers in state Rep. Ravenstahl’s district, he will win by 20 points.

10:50pm: The Rich (SD-29) campaign is still optimistic for victory. According to campaign manager Mark Cunningham, the margin of victory in Lehigh, Monroe, Carbondale, and Northampton will decide the victor.

10:40pm: Brian Sims is leading 52-48 with about 70% precincts reporting.

6:20 pm: When asked whether he felt confident heading into the homestretch, Dave Scholnick of the Babette Josephs (HD-182) campaign, needed only one word: “yes”.

5:40pm: Both campaigns in SD-29 are feeling great about their chances. Argall campaign manager Dan Cook said “Overall, we feel very confident. We think we are going to win, but we do not think it is going to be a landslide.” With concern to voter turnout, Cook pointed out that the West Brunswick area, formerly part of Argall’s district in the House, has had a high turnout. The campaign has been strong on the ground, completing 10,000 voter id calls leading up to today, and hosting a tele-town hall where over 3,000 tuned in. “We are putting the solutions out there that people want to hear,” Cook said.

5:30pm: (SD-15) The Seeds campaign (R) in has spent the entire day at the polls. They said that they are feeling confident.  Voter turnout was a little light initially but has up throughout the day.

5:10pm:The Rich campaign (SD-29) is feeling confident about their chances. Turnout has not been consistent across the district, with some precincts having high voter turnout, and others with low voter turnout. Mark Cunningham, Rich’s campaign manager, said “We feel better now than when we started. A lot of people are tired with the career politicians which is in our favor. It is not going to be a blowout, but I feel confident about our chances.”

3:28pm: Babette Josephs (HD-182) campaign spokesman, Dave Scholnick, responds to the allegations from the Sims camp that Josephs was campaigning inside the polls today.

“The reported conversation is imaginary,” Scholnick told PoliticsPa. “It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Babette was inside this particular polling place since it’s where she votes. It also shouldn’t surprise anyone by now that one of Brian’s supporters would make a silly claim like this. Remember that one of his supporters told the Philadelphia Weekly last week that Babette couldn’t be as effective as Brian because she’s a woman. When you have a campaign that puts forth lies and vitriol the way Brian Sims’ campaign does, it’s also no surprise that his supporters will follow suit.”

“A couple weeks ago the Sims campaign was trying to tie Babette to a Harrisburg scandal she had nothing to do with because the things she says are consistent,” Scholnick added. “Now they’re calling her desperate because she was spotted on election day in her polling place where she votes.”

3:00pm: from HDCC Executive Dir. Ethan Smith:

“In all of our specials, the campaigns are blowing GOTV out of the water.  In HD-134, we ran out of canvass turf by 10:30am.  The volunteer response has been overwhelming, even in this GOP-dominated district.”

1:15pm: PhillyClout is reporting that there is an allegation that Babette Josephs who is facing a tough primary from Brian Sims was campaigning inside of a polling place.

10:30am: Dan Cook, campaign manager for Dave Argall (SD-29) has stated that voter turnout has been light in the periphery precincts, and he expects more voters to come out to the polls after work. Argall voted this morning in his precinct, and then headed up to Monroe County where he will be spending most of his day at the polls. “We think if turnout is light or heavy, our people are going to get out and vote,” he says.

10:15am: Mark Cunningham, campaign manager for Brain Rich (SD-29) has confirmed that voter turnout has been low in the early hours. In the 6 or 7 precincts he has visited however, poll workers have been giving positive news. “This election is going to be really close, a few weeks ago [Argall] was up big, but we believe we have closed the gap or taken the lead,” he told PoliticsPA.

  1. @stephen:
Scavello running scared, seriously?? Listen, I’m a Dem and I don’t like the dirty tricks if they did happen, but Scavello has won this D performing seat easily before. Compared to most of those jokers in Harrisburg Scavello is not a bad choice on the R side of the aisle

  2. I think the dems have a good chance of one or two pick-ups in the special elections. Someone’s gotta fight back against Corbett’s anti-education crusade.

  3. Mario Scavello (R-176) Going all out for a write in attempt against Democrat Maureen Madden. Two write-in mailers, several Robocalls (including one telling Dems that the election was May 18th) and pollworkers at every precinct trying to persuade Dems to turncoat and write his name in. HRCC and Scavello running scared in what’s still a D performing district due to no redistricting.

  4. Did anyone check and see if the Country Club where Mustio’s victory party is has a whites-only membership policy?
